2.Key points of Exploring Linear Pattern for Class 9 Maths:
(1.)Linear Pattern: A sequence of numbers in which the difference between any two consecutive terms is always the same is called a linear pattern. (E.g.:1,3,5,7,9… increases by 2 each time).
(2.)General Expression/Term – nth term: An algebraic expression is created to find any step (nth stage) of the pattern. For example, in a tiled pattern, this expression is 2n – 1.
(3.)Linear Polynomial: The expression 2n-1 has a degree of the variable n of 1,so it is a great example of a linear polynomial.
(4.)Real-life Applications:
Example of Pocket Money: Understanding the Linear Relationship Between Daily Spending and Balance (e.g.: 100–5n).
(5.)Auto-rickshaw fare: Creating an equation of fixed fare for the initial kilometre and the fare increasing at the rate per kilometre thereafter (e.g.:25+15(n-2)).
(6.)Think and Reflect: Using the given expressions, find the value of a specific stage (such as what will be the position on the 15th or 26th day/phase) or find the phase/distance based on a given value.
3.Exploring Linear Pattern for Class 9 Maths Illustrations:
Illustration:1.A student has ₹500 in her savings bank account. She gets ₹150 every month as pocket money. How much money will she have at the end of every month from the second month onwards? Find a linear expression to represent the amount she will have in the nth month.
Solution:She has money at the end of second month
=500+2×150=500+300=800
Illustration:2.A rally starts with 120 members. Each hour 9 members drop out of the group. How many members will remain after 1, 2, 3, … hours? Find a linear expression to represent the number of members at the end of the nth hour.
Solution:After one hour members are=120-9=111
After one hour members are=111-9=102
After one hour members are=102-9=93
After hours:
Illustration:3.Suppose the length of a rectangle is 13 cm.Find the area if the breadth is (i) 12 cm, (ii) 10 cm, (iii) 8 cm. Find the linear pattern representing the area of the rectangle.
Solution:(i)Area of rectangle=Length×breadth
=13×12=156
(ii)Area of rectangle=Length×breadth
=13×10=230
(iii)Area of rectangle=Length×breadth
=13×8=104
d=156-130=26,a=156
Illustration:4.Suppose the length of a rectangular box is 7 cm and breadth is 11 cm. Find the volume if the height is (i) 5 cm, (ii) 9 cm, (iii) 13 cm. Find the linear pattern representing the volume of the rectangular box.
Solution:(i)Volume of rectangular box=Length×breadth×height
=7×11×5=385
(ii)Volume of rectangular box=Length×breadth×height
=7×11×9=693
(iii)Volume of rectangular box=Length×breadth×height
=7×11×13=1001
Illustration:5.Sarita is reading a book of 500 pages. She reads 20 pages every day. How many pages will be left after 15 days? Express this as a linear pattern.
Solution:Left pages after 15 day=500-20×15
=500-300=200
With the above examples, one can understand the problems with solution based on Exploring Linear Pattern for Class 9 Maths.
4.Practice Problems of Exploring Linear Pattern for Class 9 Maths for Students:
(1.)Using the expression 2n – 1, can you find out how many tiles will be there in the 15th stage and the 26th stage of the pattern? Also, which stage will contain 21 tiles and 47 tiles?
(2.)If nth term is 100-5n.What amount will be left on the 15th day? How many days will it take for the entire amount to be spent?
Answer:(1.)29,51,stage:11,24 (2.)25,20
